Former Auburn QB Jeremy Johnson pursuing pro basketball career

In June, Jeremy Johnson posted a video on Instagram of him making several deep 3-pointers with the caption, “Been gone 4 years. Been training for a month. This is built for me.”

It turns out the former Auburn quarterback is pursuing a professional basketball career.

Johnson, who starred in both football and basketball in high school, told the Montgomery Advertiser that he’s signed with a basketball agent and is hoping to sign with an overseas team at some point soon.

“It was my first love,” Johnson told the Montgomery Advertiser. “And it was another opportunity for me to be able to provide for my family that I have. I have a little girl now. I really feel like I have a good chance at going overseas and playing and making a living there. I’m happy for this opportunity, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for me.”

Johnson averaged 18 points per game as a senior at Carver in 2012-13 and considered playing both football and basketball in college before focusing on just football.

The 6-foot-5 Johnson told the Montgomery Advertiser that he’s dropped about 15 pounds since the end of last season at Auburn. He’s down to about 230 pounds.

Johnson tried out for the New York Giants at the team’s rookie minicamp in May, but wasn’t signed and has since seemingly shifted his focus to basketball.

In another recent basketball video he posted on Instagram, Johnson blows by a defender in a men’s league game with a quick behind the back move before finishing with a layup.

The ultimate goal, Johnson said, is to get to the NBA.

“I feel like if I get over there and play over there for at least two or three years,” Johnson said, “I’ll really have a chance to play in the NBA.”
